Exploring Hurricane Wilma, and Emily( the story)
This resort has gone through a few names changes in the last few years. As well as proprietors.
Unbeknownst to us, we were visiting the resort after the Palace resorts already sold it, and after there was a land dispute, and after the coast line was hit by two hurricanes, and after the once vast beach belonging to the hotel was confiscated by another hotel and closed off. And lastly after all the animals that once comprised the nature reserve that used to occupy this land, were all driven off by the previous owner.
In the remaining, functioning, part of the resort there are signs pointing to unfound flamingo and alligator terrains. There are pathways blocked by overgrown shrubbery and impassable rubble. About 75 percent of the resort is still in shambles from hurricane Emily, and has not been restored.
The devastation from this natural disaster was really disheartening, and made our vacation really somber. People were working consistently to haul away debris, still, five years later. The Resort USED TO BE so enchanting, you can tell by what is there now. Everything is in the middle of a romantic jungle-like wooded land. There are several fresh water ponds and streams, and one by our private hut (with jacuzzi tub).
The beach however was enclosed by a fence and the coast line was a rocky and unfriendly shallow coral reef. No swimming!
The food was occasionally really good, but other times, a bit unsettling. It just didn't bear the biggest resemblance to steak. Breakfast and deserts were the best things to have. Eggs with Chorizo! and home made flan.
The highlight is really the rooms. The resort obviously had a lot more to offer in the passed. Now it's more like an ecological discovery than a vacation. Not the fun in the sun kind of place.
