Fun time but needed some adjustments
Had a Great Time on vacation. There were 2 problems... was our room we were right next to the frieght elevator so you heard a loud noise every 5 minutes going up and down on the elevator. We tryed to switch rooms but they didnt accomadate us after all the money we spent. As we checked into the hotel we had to pay a fee of 200.00 dollars to the coceriage as a hotel fee wish someone told us about this when we booked the trip. Food was okay needed more chocies of resturants. many closed at nights. But all in all had a great time! The pool was great and the employees were very friendly and helpful.

Are gratuities included in the Jewel Dunn's River Beach Inclusives?11 answers
I'm looking at all the details on the resorts website and your website and I don't see it specifically stated that tips or gratuities are included in the inclusive part of the package. Are they or are they not? Thank you!
1 year, 15 months ago
momofthree
Gratuities are included in the rates at this resort and you are not required to leave an additional tip, however the maids and wait staff always appreciate a little something extra if you're willing to give it.
KateCC
its optional if you like to tip then do so if not then don't. but everyone is super nice that you will likely do.
cheeks
Yes tips are included , although we did tip extra to some of the staff.
rayed41
All tips and gratuities are included but tipping is accepted and they appreciated it very much
BWJW5233
We thought that the tips were included since usually they are at an all inclusive but people were tipping so we really had no choice. They were accepting them.
1Aunt
everything is included but we still tipped when we thought service was outstanding. like the platinum restraunt we ate steak and lobster tail white gloved service champagne we tipped that night.
dangerpartyof5
nope. even if they did, i think you'd still be expected to pay a couple dollars here and there. It's not expected in the resort, but it is definitely expected when they shuttle you back and forth to/from the airport.
Honeymooner1233
All tips were included, except we tipped the drivers from the airport to the hotel and back again.
GGRealtor
They are not included and very much expected
Magz
yes, all gratuities with repect to the hotel are included. (Not any trips booked outside the hotel) We did, however, occassionally tip bartenders, and waiters and waitresses for exceptional service (discreetly as they could be terminated if caught)
mommamia10
YES. If you want to give anybody anything extra that is entirely up to you. I know they appreciate anything really.

What is the resort attire?11 answers
Is shorts with flipflops ok at dinner at the buffett? Can you wear swimsuits and coverups at lunch to the buffett?
1 year, 15 months ago
trixie
Casual attire is permitted at the buffet (including flip flops). I would recommend checking with the front desk about wearing a swim suit to the buffet, however the beach bar and grill Aquamarine does allow you to dine in your beachwear.
KateCC
yes to both questions. the buffett is very laid back without a dress code
dunns2011
Yes shorts and flip flops is ok at the buffet. The buffet is only for breakfast. The Italian restaurant casual the other two you need to dress up and guys need a collared shirt.
rayed41
Each Restaurant has a dress code so the only one were we can wear swimsuits and coverups is to the open air restaurant.
BWJW5233
We put our bathing suits with a cover up on before we went down to breakfast and stayed in them until we got ready for dinner. It is very casual.
My husband wore shorts, usually a shirt with a collar and sandels to dinner. Dockers to the white glove restaurant which we did not care for.
1Aunt
Casual for most places, But at night 2 restaurants required a little dressier. Slacks, shoes and a collared shirt for the men. The food was worth it. Had a great time. The buffet is the place to go for breakfast!
NJBob
it's all covered in the orientation at 10am everymorning. some restaurants require formal dress, some don't. beach shorts and flip flops are fine for the buffet.
Honeymooner1233
You can where shorts anf flipflops at certain dining areas and you definitely can were swimsuits and coverups at lunch.
GGRealtor
Yes, we wore shorts, swimsuits, flipflops, t-shirts, etc. The only time there's a dress code is if you go to their nicer restaurant, Platinum. That has a casual dress code, but men must wear collared shirts and shoes.
schilzaga
Dinner is not offerred at the Coral Lounge (the buffet). You can eat in swimsuits/coverups for lunch at the buffet. Attire for dinner at the Japanese and Italian restaurants is resort casual. We saw everything from dresses to shorts and flip flops. The Platinum (contemporary Carribean) is the only restaurant that requests slacks and shoes for men.
jenninpa
Yes to both!

baggage fees / activities11 answers
Since this is all inclusive with flights, when / where can I find amounts for airline baggage fees?
Can I purchase excursions after I book?
Do I need to make restuarant reservations before I arrive? If so, how do I go about this?
1 year, 14 months ago
Vicki
Since the airlines are constantly updating their baggage fee policies, we would recommend checking the airline's website directly for the most up-to-date information.
Excursions can definitely be purchased after your reservation is made - all you have to do is call our Concierge department at 1-800-915-2322 and one of our representatives can add an exursion to your reservation.
Most resorts won't allow you to book your dinner reservations until after you arrive. Once you get to the resort, the concierge desk can assist you with making these reservations.
KateCC
As far as baggage fees look at the web site of the airline that you are flying there on. That is how we found out. Yes, you can purchase excursions after you book. You can even purchase excursions there. There is a travel desk right at the resort. As far as reservastions there is only one resturant that requires reservations and we were able to book the day before we wanted to eat there. Hope that helps!
dunns2011
thru the airline website
yes you could purchase excursions at the hotel
no you could reserve restaurant when you get to the hotel only restaurant you need reservation is for the sushi place which was good.
cheeks
We flew on Delta and there were no baggage fees.
Yes, you can book excursions at the hotel. You don't need reservations except for Jade the Japanese restaurant. I never saw anyone wating in line for the other restaurants.
DMDM
We flew through Delta and our baggage was free. The only restaurant that you need to make a reservation at is the Japanese restaurant and not until you get there.
rayed41
We used delta and there was no baggage fees. Yes you can do all booking with your excursions at the hotel. The only restuarant you will need to make a reservation is at the Japanese restuarant, do that as soon as you can as it gets booked up early.
BWJW5233
I called Air Jamaica, the weight on a bag is 50 lbs. They were very helpful on the phone.
They have many excursions that you can book at the hotel. They are also very helpful.
You don't need to make a reservation for the restaurants. Only the Japanese which is like Benihana. You can make it when you get there. We made it when we checked in for mid week.
Italian Restaurant was great and you can sit outside which was lovely.
1Aunt
We got one checked bag free per person because it was an international flight. You can purchase excursions at the resort, but I would book earlier as some fill up. The only restaurant that requires reservations is Jade Garden, and you can make reservations with the concierge when you arrive. Enjoy! It was a beautiful place, and we miss being there.
TuckerJC
you have to pay baggage fees with the airline, excursions i would wait till i get there b/c they have great deals once you arrive, restuarant reservations only at one the fine dining one. one night they did dinner on the resort pier with a sax player 5 course meal
dangerpartyof5
depends on which airline you get stuck with. I had to pay baggage fees going. but it was free coming back. if i were you, just assume you'll be paying $25 per bag eachway.
Honeymooner1233
You must get the baggage fees from the airlines. Just go to their site and they can give you the fees. Ours was $20 per bag.
You can book excursions after your arrive at the resort and you do not need dinner reservations before you arrive. Most restaurants do not require reservations. This is a small resort and there are no lines at any location. You will enjoy it very much.
GGRealtor
You can find the airline baggage fees on the airlines website. Yes you will be able to purchase excursions after booking this can be done through cheapcarribean.com or also once you get to the hotel. Some restaurants do require a reservations but that can be done if you call the front desk and you will be connected to restaurants

Snorkeling off the beach at Jewel Dunns River?11 answers
I was wondering if I should bring my fins and mask and if theres anything worth looking at off the resorts beach.
1 year, 13 months ago
Tommyleelill
I think that would be a good idea. I know you can rent snorkel and fins, but if you have your own, bring 'em. The Marietas (???) islands are ok for snorkeling, but don't go just for that reason. I decided to go scuba diving that day, and my wife did snorkeling. The current was so strong, you didn't really see much sea life. On the other side of the island, I guess it was better, so it's kinda of a hit or miss. Here's what you should know. If you get the option to get off the boat (depending on your tour) to go to the island beach, DON'T! There is nothing there. No water, no bathroom, nothing. My wife and friend ended up regretting that decision. Just FYI.
Anonymous
YES, I WISH I DID.
Anonymous
I didn't go snorkeling but there is reef right in front of the hotel. You'll probably get some good snorkeling in!
Heather811
There are not many options for snorkeling right off the beach. There are areas that you can go, but according to the staff, it is not really worth it to go for $25, so I don't know if it would be worth your time bringing equipment.
TMC2413
they have equipment there, but you can call or write to verify
RickFortune
They have them there to use, but if you like yours bring them. There is a reef and you can take a snorkle boat out. There is so much to do, but you can't do it all in one trip!
Herameah
There wasn't anything to see off the beach, plus the wave runners will hit you if you swim outside the ropes..Pay the $25 boat fee and go out to the reef on the resort's dive boat.
tommyleelil
we snorkel in florida all the time-do not bring your snorkel gear-u can rent them there for$25 and they take you out for one hour.THE REEF IS OK AND IS PRETTY FAR OUT.sNORKEL GEAR IS HEAVY N YOU WILL PAY FOR IT IN YOUR LUGGAGE WEIGHT-OR OVERWEIGHT.
Carolruss
The reef at the Jewel's resort is well beyond the permitted swim area for the beach and that area isn't very exciting for snorkeling (typical of most resort beaches.) However, there are snorkeling excursions/tours available which are specifically designed to give you a good snorkel experience, so if all other aspects of the resort look good, that should be considered in your property decision.
100Percent
definately bring them there are areas and excursions that you can use them. Plus they fact that it would be more sanitary bringing your own

when booking what does run of the house mean11 answers
1 year, 13 months ago
tneal
Run of the house means that you aren't guaranteed a specific type of room prior to check-in. You can ask for a specific type when you check in and if it is available, they will usually give it to you (Say, king size, non-smoking) but it could wind up that all they have left is two doubles in a smoking room, so that;s what you would get. You get a lower rate in exchange for not having certainty on the type of room up front.
CinATL
ROH means your all inclusive stay choice rooms with views stocked fridge in the suite, sodas , coffee , waters turn down service at night and room service daily JUST EAT ,DRINK and BE MERRY
TIMAMU
This is the name of the room you will be staying in and rest assured that the accomadations will be adequate! Just came from the jewel and we had such a wonderful and romantic time.
TeeandVette
All of the rooms are nice there. I booked 2 run of the house rooms, one was facing the beach with a balcony, one was facing the mountains and also had a nice balcony. can't complain, the place is awesome.
Hobie24
Run of the house is their basic cheapest room. That's what we paid for and were "upgraded" to ocean view upon check in. However, being on the second floor, our room had a great view of the club/bar building rooftop, not so much the ocean. With that said, we did not spend much time in our room and so I feel the room or the view did not hinder our vacation experience. I would rather spend the extra money for a longer stay.
ligerANDminx
It means that it's the cheapest one. It is not luxurious but it is not bad. It's clean and there is enough space. It's worthy because you can profit all the resort but paying less price. If you don't need a very luxurious bedroom, I recommend it.
Anonimo
ROH means, that you get the best available, which is probably not an ocean view or ocean front, unless you are lucky and they upgrade you
diva724
It would just be a regular room which is what we had and it was very nice
Anonymous
I think that means you are not limited to where you can go, how much or where you eat. You have no schedule that you have to follow or wristbands to track your activity. You are totally free to do whatever you would like.

Was the hotel shuttle ride too long?11 answers
Has anyone booked a private taxi or ride from the airport to the Jewel and how long did it take without stopping?
1 year, 13 months ago
Tommyleelill
Jewel Dunn's River is approximately a 1.5 hour drive from Montego Bay International Airport (MBJ).
DanielleCC
Use USA Transfers - they are waiting for you when you exit the airport. Friendly and safer drivers.
JeffB32
It was almost two hours, but if you know the geography it wasn't that bad.
BiggerJohn
We were at the resort within 1 hour and 30 minutes...with one stop before us, which was 20 minutes away from Jewel--so the stop only took about 3 minutes. It was quite simple and easy compared to a taxi ride around there. The shuttle was included in our travel package. I would hope you can include that in your stay.
STLTripster
I only know the bus ride was 1 3/4 hours.. the taxi would totally be worth it... The bus stopped at a few resorts before ours... :(
Tammie
about 2 hours from the Montigo Bay airport. I was told a taxi would cost approx $140 USD.
NCTraveler103
Yes, the shuttle ride is VERY long. You stop at several other hotels on the way. This hotel is almost the last stop on the trip. If you don't mind paying extra, I would take a private taxi.
Suburbanite
They make a few stops and it took 1 hour and 35 minutes, but it is not bad at all.
Herameah
We booked a shuttle and it took close to 2 hours. The driver made one stop on the way. We asked about a taxi and they said it would take about a little over an hour without any stops.
Liam915
I didn't book privately, I took the tour bus offered with the package and it's not bad at all. It took maybe an hour and 45 minutes but you stop near halfway to get out, get a drink, go to the bathroom, etc. Plus, the driver filled us in on where we were, significant history of the area, etc. We also stopped and dropped off travellers at two other resorts before the Jewel. The bus ride really isn't bad.
KimiGeff
Yes...too many stops, over 2 1/2 hour trip. Next time I'll forgo the free shuttle through JTL and hire a private cab on arrival. Ill use the shuttle going back...no hurry to leave, jut to get there!!

You may book a reservation with airfare for one guest only if needed. You must book this with a cheapCaribbean sales agent so they can purchase airfare for only one passenger. Please contact CheapCaribbean.com at 1.800.915.2322.
DanielleCC
If you need to book a reservation for 2 people in the hotel room, but only 1 person with airfare, you can do so by calling into our reservvation center. A sales agent would be able to put together that package for you.
KristinCC
There is an additional fee for someone coming onto the property eating, drinking per day. I would call the resort to find out the additional fee amount. It's about $100 a day.
LadyPAndBigTy
Dear brownbear39,
You must book according to the area you are going to. Jamaica is not the US in size but it is a big Island. So you want to make sure you are located close to the Parish you will be visiting. Good luck!
SpaniardandAmerican
Since he will be your guest, I would suggest that you book him at The Jewel as a guest. If you booked yourself as an all inclusive guest, then do the same for him. Therefore, you both will be able to enjoy The Jewel experience to it's fullest.
SweetT
If he will be a "paying guest" you should simply list him as part of your party. (No pun intended.) This is important, because the resort must be very restrictve (residents only) because it is an "all inclusive" property and no wrist bands are utilized (as many other resorts require.) Further, the front gate, lobby personnel and maid service employees are trained to restrict entry and keep watch for unauthorized folks, so I'd strongly recommend playing by the rules.
100Percent
use cheap carribean
Kennybigdaddy
I don't think you have to book anything special. At Jewel's you don't have to wear armbands or anything crazy like at other resorts. I am sure it would be fine for your guest to come visit with you at the pool!

I don't think so... we went out there whenever we wanted and the grill was open all night and it is right on the beach!
Herameah
As far as I know, the beach does not close. The lifeguard is only on duty until I think 4 or 5pm but there were always people in/on the beach later in the evening.
KimiGeff
No it doesnt ever close. People rent the "cabanas" at night to star gaze and whatever. Just be aware there are people walking the beach that are not guests selling weed and other items. They will hound you if seem even a little interested.

jamaicalover99

I was accompanied by my wife, and most guests were couples, but we did see some single folks of both sexes. Although it is not a "meat market" resort as some places are, your group could definately have a great time at the Jewel. But you're young, so if your focus will be on finding guys to party with then the singles type properties would likely be more what you should consider.

Does the beach at the Jewel Dunn's River Beach Resort & Spa have a white sand? It looks more tan on the pictures12 answers
9 months ago
zvezda
The resort, and those who have travelled to the resort report that the sand on the beach is white and powdery. Depending upon the season, it can tend to get a bit more tan/beige. This is not to say that the beach is not clean, it just depends on the tides and the location of the beach itself.
KristinCC
The sand is powdery and nice. It's very light & bright but not WHITE.
MAXN
The sand isn't exactly white, but it's fine enough to pass for a decent beach.
JackieChansWife
Very white, soft sand

Room beverages/waiter service at The Jewel Dunn's River Resort11 answers
Are the mini fridges inn the room stocked with beer,as well as water and soda? Is there waiter service on the beach and pool areas?

Hi,
The Jewel Dunns River is a lovely resort with excellent service. The minifridge is stocked daily with water and soft drinks, and with wine in beer in the Suites and Concierg Level rooms. There is also wait service at the pool and beach.
ccsusan1
Unless you are in a premium room, the fridges are stocked only with bottled water, coke, diet coke, sprite, ginger ale, club soda and fruit juices. Yes there is water service on the beach and any of the staff will quickly retrieve a drink for you!
Cougar2
The mini fridge was stocked with water, soda and juice. There is waiter service on the beach and the pool areas.
Huskers
There were non-alcoholic beverages in the Room Fridge... I don't know if there was wait service - I lived at the swim up bar and was having too much fun to pay attention ...

Yes on all of the above. Some beer in the fridge, more so water and soda though. Waiter service at the beach and pool both for drinks and they had a few fresh fruit trays go around as well.
Mazz
Just mixers but alot of them.Juice, sodas, water etc. The bartenders will give u a glass of liquor to take with u (just be subtle they aren't supposed to) a small tip like a dollar or two helps.
Waiters came around on the beach frequently but no one approached me in the pool. To be honest we hardly went to the pool.

The room fridges are not stocked with beer but they will do it for you if you ask. Yes, there is wait service on the beach and pool decks. Ask for Chadwick or Everton, they are the best. We are booking today for another trip in July.

The Mini fridges are only stocked with Soda, Juice and Water. Yes there is Waiter service on the beach and pool area's just sometimes they are hard to find.
Vermonters
the fridge is stocked with soft drinks and water (might be different in higher categories) and yes, there is waiter service at both beach and pool

The mini frig had water, sodas and juice. No beer. Restocked daily.
There is drink service on the beach and at the pools, you can arrange for food at the beach with the staff.
Fireman309
Our room did have a mini fridge but it was not stocked with alcohol. Some of the rooms did have alcohol stocked, but I'm not sure how it is determined what rooms have it, and which ones do not. However, you really don't need it as you can get drinks around the pool area and/or at night from pretty much everywhere. We didn't have waiter service at all around the pool or at the beach, but again, both pools had pool bars where we got drinks whenever we needed and the beach is so close to a bar that it really didn't make much of a difference. It was a nice feature that we had on our honeymoon in Mexico, to have drinks brought to us whenever we needed, but we don't think this took away at all from the great experience the Jewel offerred.

Do we have to change our US currency to Jamaican currency?11 answers
5 months ago
Nancy
no, the accept US$ and credit cards
mupsi
The US currency is accepted at some places within Jamaica. You can always exchange a small amount of money to the Jamaican currency just in case it is needed.
MariaCC
No. Once in Jamaica everything on the resort is priced in the American dollar. They appreciate you paying in American because it's worth more than the Jamaican dollar.
Fireman309
No, you definitely do not need to change your currency, in fact, friends of ours did that and it was actually more difficult spending money that way. You can pretty much just charge everything to the room and pay with your credit card before heading back home.
mshaw03
No, you do not have to exchange currency. Everything at the resort (and affiliated excursions) is converted to US dollars (and seemed to be preferred). A lady on my flight home said she lost money when she tried to exchange back to US currency. (You might get overwhelmed and confused terying to calculate in your head if you are getting a good deal when shopping) :-)
I didn't convert and had not a single problem!!!!
DamaAmor
no brig us< singles< hotel can make change in us $$$
PHAT
nope, everyone was more than happy to take american dollars, in fact they prefer them.
j5worm
No, You have to get very far off the beaten trail to find someone that does not actually prefer US currency.
codyclan
No, and the resort will be able to provide you with change for tipping.
InternationalGirl
No, you don't have to. Everyone takes, and seems to prefer, American money.
clallen1
You can use US dollars for everything. I think they perfer US dollars!
Skater88
No. They accept USD in the hotel, Dunns River Falls and the stores

Are the restaurants included in the package or is that an additional fee?11 answers
4 months ago
Mike Undi
The all inclusive package includes your room, all meals ( buffet and ala carte restaurants), drinks (alcoholic and non acoholic), snacks, and gratuities.
ccsusan1
THE RESTAURANTS AT THE RESORT ARE ALL INCLUDED IN THE PRICE.
LIZZYJAYE
This is an all inclusive resort, so yes, the restaurants are included. The only thing extra is if you want a private dinner via candelite on the beach, otherwise they are included.
romejen
There is no additional fee for the restuarants and they were all wonderful!
SunnyNY
Yes - the meals are included in the package. There are 5 or 6 restaurants. Only one requires a reservation.
EJevis
Yes, the restaurants are included in the all inclusive package. Unless you book a private dinner on the beach or pier, that is extra. You only need reservations at the Japanese hibachi rest. otherwise, you just go whenever you want.
CCNY
all inclusive....their rum drinks are awesome
SeanChris
All restaurants are included. There are no additional fees required, but we did tip all of our servers everytime we sat down to eat (even breakfast). It is not reqired to tip, but I think the staff does appreciate the "respect".
Bellc
Restaurants are included
DABB
Restaurants, drinks, etc are all included with your stay.
Bubbly
all food and drinks are included. Though you can get some premium wines by the bottle for extra $ at dinner. Food is amazing and works of art!

What nights are the candlelight dinner and steel drum performers?6 answers
3 months ago
tas
These activies are usually arranged directly by the resort upon arrival according to their current occupancy level.
MariaCC
We spent 6 nights there. There were no steel drum performers. In fact, any live music didn't start until 10 p.m. I think you have to make a reservation to have the candlelight dinner on the beach.
EJevis
Steel drum band is every Sunday night. Candlelight dinner is scheduled for private dinner any night you request. It can be on the beach (which we did and it was fantastic!) on the pier and maybe in the room. I forget the 3rd location of choice. They also host dinner on the pier for everyone (it was Fri. when we went) and dinner on the beach for everyone with a variety show afterward. That was on Tues. night when we were there.
CCNY
Dinner on the Pier is Friday night
Bubbly
When we went week of 3/26/12 we had a beach buffet dinner on Tuesday and a formal dinner on the peir on Friday (both you can dress casual). A Reggae band plays after the beach dinner on Tuesday and then Thursday night they have a bon fire (with smores!) and band too. Make reservations for Jade in advance ...maybe Platinum too (requires pants and dress shoes).
bkkrupp
They have an italian resturant that is on the outside dock. But they do do dining on the the docks under stars on Friday nights not sure. They also have a private dinner on the beach but that costas extra.

how is the beach?8 answers
I was wondering about the size and quality of the beach. It looks very small in the few pics i've seen

cruzincarl
The beach at the Jewel is on the smaller side, however, it i a very nice beach and the location of it gives it a very private feel.
KristinCC
The beach is a little small. But it never felt crowded!
SunnyNY
Good eye - the beachfront is very short. It doesn't allow for long (or even moderate) walks on the beach. One end is blocked off by another esort. The other end has a fence with a gate. Apparently, when you go through the gate, there is a line of beach shanties with people selling trinkets.
EJevis
The beach is small, but very clean and convenient. If you forget something or need to use the restroom, it's just a short walk. The waiter comes to you on the beach as well.
CCNY
very small, but quiet. lots of cabanas to escape sun as well
SeanChris
The beach is a bit smaller, I'd say 100 yards wide by about 40 yards deep. The sand is great, the water is beautiful. For laying out and taking a dip its perfect. Don't expect to take a long walk though, security is posted at both ends to keep riffraff out.
DABB
The beach area is very nice, good quality. It s not very long, but there is plenty of room for everyone, get there early to get the seat you want.
Bubbly
Beach is a bit small pool is much better with swim up bar.

What weeks are the spring breakers there? My husband and I are in our 60's and want to avoid these weeks.5 answers

Bonnie
avoid mid-March to Easter...those are the BIG weeks
SeanChris
They were not there this past week - I would avoid April for spring breakers, or call the resort, they are great!
Bubbly
Don't worry about that at all! It's mostly adult couples, and it's not a wild drink-fest. Not that type of environment at all. Very tranquil, especially around the spa. That being said, it's definitely not boring!
Billster
For the price to stay in the cheapest room it is not really a "spring breakers" resort....at least not college age. Spring breakers usually try to cram 4 ppl to a room and this is an adult couples resort. We went week of 3/26/12 and I did see 2 younger girls there but everyone else was couples. Plently of ppl drinking though but no one going crazy.
bkkrupp
Most spring breaks are in March or April.
